As a Prepper, I try to anticipate the worst-case scenarios and prepare for them before they happen. Being prepared not only gives me peace of mind, but it also allows me to take care of my family and loved ones in case of an emergency.
Long term food storage is one of my greatest concerns because I have a family to feed. I have done my research and found that there are various options for food storage, including freeze-dried meals, dehydrated foods, and canned goods. However, I also know that stockpiling these items can take up a lot of space and can be expensive. Freeze Dried foods have a very long life, some say decades before the food goes bad. Commercially available freeze dried has its place for convenience and ease of use. These products are very, very expensive
But if you want to save money in the long run, a more cost-effective solution is to buy your own Harvest Right Freeze Dryer and freeze dry all the food that you and your family like. I purchased a medium Harvest Right Freeze Dryer back in 2021. It has been a blessing since. I can now preserve my favorite meals and snacks without worrying about them expiring or taking up too much space in my pantry. After I Freeze Dry, I store them in mylar bags and add oxygen absorbers.
I did make some mistakes along the way, I learned that most fruits and vegetables need to be put in boiling water for about a minute and this process is known as blanching. I grow a decent sized prepper garden each year and have an abundance of carrots. If you do not blanch, the color of the carrots change color to white, instead of the red orange they normally are. Yes, they still tasted like carrots. Another learning curve to anticipate is that the pump that adjusts the pressure in the freeze dryer is going to die on you eventually. As a prepper it is a good idea to have a few extra pumps that the company sells. I prefer the oilless pump for the convenience, but it comes at a higher price as compared to the pumps that use oil.
Not only is freeze drying more cost-effective, but it also helps to retain the nutritional value of the food. The freeze-drying process removes water from the food, preserving its nutrients and flavor. This makes it a great option for those who want to eat healthy and stay prepared at the same time.
One of the best things about owning a Harvest Right Freeze Dryer is that you have control over what goes into your food. You can choose to freeze dry fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and even full meals. This allows you to customize your food storage according to your dietary needs and preferences.
